There is no question that of all electrical power generating technologies, coal-fired thermal plant still provides the greatest percentage of the world's total generating capacity. Boilers using pulverised coal as their primary source of fuel have undergone continuous development over the last half-century, driven by market pressures for lower costs and higher reliability. However, recent years have seen the use of this mature technology in steep decline, eclipsed by gas as the number-one fuel choice for new power plant. A combination of commercial and environmental pressures in an increasingly deregulated energy market has resulted in the vast majority of new generating capacity being derived from gas turbine plant.
