"As performance-based rate-making comes in to the industry, transmission and distribution utilities will need to spend money to make money," says Joe Moran of Kema Consulting in the US. "At the moment there is a lot of older equipment in the transmission system, and it's something that utilities don't notice until something bad happens. New York and Chicago have both had big outages in recent years and it means the company takes a public relations hit. Now those systems are being upgraded."rnMoran acts as consultant for companies who are upgrading their T&D systems, and he says that deregulation is driving companies to collect and use far more data from the field.
