Although it is one of the most mature of all power generation technolo-gies, large-scale hydroelectric power schemes are among the most contentious. Despite claims to 'renewable' energy status, many recent large dam-building projects designed to provide clean, low-cost energy as well as irrigation and potable water, are also viewed by many as major social and environmental disasters. Turkey's South Anatolia GAP project, the Three Gorges in China and the Narmada Valley hydropower scheme in India represent just a few of the highest-profile current projects which continue to attract protest and controversy on a world scale.
