During warm weather, combustion turbine (CT) operators face the problem of degradation of turbine generation capacity. In summer, turbines can produce as much as twenty per cent less power than in winter. Why? As CTs are constant volume machines, at a given shaft speed they always move the same volume of air. On hot days, when air is less dense, power output falls off. By feeding in cooler air, mass flow is increased and greater power production results.
