Alptransit Gotthard says more than 500 test runs have been successfully carried out in the 57km Gotthard Base Tunnel during the first 50 days of trial operations as final preparations are made for the handover of the tunnel to Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). Test runs started at the beginning of October with trains operating under ETCS Level 2. High-speed trials started at the beginning of November using German Rail's ICE-S test train and the first high-speed trial was carried out on November 8 at the maximum permitted speed of 275 km/h. Around 3000 more test runs will take place before the tunnel is inaugurated on June 1. Commercial services are due to start in December.
