China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) has been awarded a contract worth around $US 805 million to construct the western section of Libya's coastal railway, which will eventually connect the Tunisian and Egyptian borders. The contract covers the 172km double-track line from Tripoli to the Tunisian border at Ras Ajdir. Construction is expected to take 54 months to complete. CRCC already had already been chosen by the Libyan government to build the 352km section from Al Khums, to Misratah and Surt. Russian Railways (RZD) has a contract to build the adjoining 554km Surt-Benghazi section.
