Heavy machinery grinds away brick, concrete and solid rock as a railway tunnel near Radford in southwest Virginia gets its roof raised to accommodate taller trains. Started last October, this marked the beginning of a three-year engineering project to increase Norfolk Southern's (NS) intermodal freight capacity by raising vertical clearances in 28 tunnels on a line between the port of Norfolk, Virginia, and Chicago, known as the Heartland Corridor.
