TTCI and the Federal Railroad Administration are setting up a communications and train control test bed at the railway test centre in Pueblo, Colorado, United States. This will avoid the problems associated with testing a new system on a live railway. If your railway or development team is considering whether to implement a new communications system, a com-munications-based application, or a train control system, you probably have questions that need to be answered or concepts that require validation prior to committing to a particular system or configuration. Invariably there are trade-offs among the options. How do you resolve these concerns and evaluate the trade-offs with confidence in a cost-effective manner? There are a number of ways to determine the best solution, ranging from analysis at one end of the spectrum, through simulation and lab testing, all the way to a pilot installation.
