US based startup Cereplast in December commercialised its algae bioplastics with the introduction of Biopropylene 109D. It identified a post-industrial algae source, allowing the company to come to market with the algae-based bioplastic sooner than anticipated. Biopropylene 109D is an injection moulding grade manufactured with 20% algae biomass. The algae biomass used is a byproduct from algae biofuels and nutritionals, resulting from industrial processing to extract specialty chemicals.
