With oil prices surging to over $66 a barrel in recent months, ethanol is becoming an increasingly attractive option for US drivers. A new pilot-scale study on ethanol fuel efficiency suggests improved fuel costs for cars at 10%, 20% and 30% of ethanol in petroleum. Allen Kasperson, a fuel research specialist and former instructor at Lake Area Vocational Technical School in Watertown, South Dakota, designed and ran the test. The American Coalition for Ethanol (ACE) commissioned the pilot study to collect data in advance of a 20% mandate on ethanol use in Minnesota. It did not include E85, an 85% blend of ethanol and gasoline, increasingly popular on US roads. The short-distance test was conducted in three late-model vehicles. The tests were run at 70 miles per hour (mph) on 300-mile tests on Interstate 29 between Watertown, South Dakota, and Brookings, South Dakota.
