Recognition and acceptance of ethanol as an oxygenate additive to motor fuels has extended beyond the US and Brazil, over the last 3 to 4 years. Organized evaluative, legislative and developmental efforts have been taken up by several countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe and by Australia, for starting and increasing the use of ethanol in motor fuels. Bio-ethanol, produced from one of several crops is acknowledged to help in maintaining carbon balance. The boost in ethanol demand is expected to increase world annual production levels from the present 33 billion to 50 billion over the next decade. Country-wide increases in ethanol production may range from between 25 and 100%.
