摘要

In June 2000, one of us (FD) discovered a small colony of a species of Pyrola at a pre-flowering stage while botanizing in the neighbourhood of Golden Grove near Birr. The colony was monitored over a period of several weeks and two other known Pyrola sites near Roscrea were also visited for comparison purposes. A very close similarity between the species in all three sites was noted. This discovery is of considerable interest in the context of How's (1650) report of the first recorded report of 'Pyrola vulgaris' in Ireland by Richard Heaton "In a bogge by Roscre in the King's County [Co Offaly]."
