Inland Steel Company initiated a major delay improvement effort at its six stand 80 inch hot strip mill in 1992. The roll change delay needed to be below 5.5 percent, in combination with other improvement efforts, to reach the targeted annual production rate of 4.5 million tons. The roll change delay rate histori-cally was as high as 9 percent. High speed steel (HSS) rolls and rolling oil were identified as two potential meth-ods to eliminate surface roll changes (intermediate roll changes).
