In January, seamless pipe producer Dalmine was sold to Techint of Italy and Siderca of Argentina. The sale marks the privatization of the last state-owned Italian steelmaker. Finally, a legacy of debt has been lifted from the Italian taxpayer. Since 1978, the steel industry has costtheltaliangovernment about 30,000 billion lire (U.S. $18 billion at today's exchange rates). The complex process of retrenchment has taken six years.
