When Bessemer-Kelly steelmaking was first introduced in the United States in thefflid-1800s, one of the first steel products manufactured was rail for the fledgling American railroads. The growth of railroads hi the 19th century depended upon a strong steel rail with enhanced wear resistance for longer life. The first 120 years of rail steel metallurgy had a relatively unexciting, evolutionary history. However, in the past decade, a revolution has taken place that has prompted a host of technological developments around the world. In the United States alone, over a quarter billion dollars currently are being spent on modernizing the two domestic rail mills.
