Recent Developments in Post-Combustion Technology at Nucor Plymouth

Through a controlled practice of farther oxidizing CO to CO_2 in the furnace (and taking advantage of the heat released by the exothermic reaction), reductions in both energy consumption and in tap-to-tap time can be achieved. Electrical savings of 40 kWh/charge ton and four minutes in tap-to-tap time are consistently gained using post-combustion. Further, it has been shown that these cost-saving results are attainable without costly tradeoffs or side effects. These results, and the recent data that shows environmental advantages, substantiate the ongoing benefits of using post-combustion in electric arc furnaces. Further refinement of this technology, including emission measurements and lance practices and designs, will continue to maximize its benefits.
