The turn of the year saw a flurry of acquisition moves in Europe. The sale of 60 percent of Eko Stahl AG to Belgium's Cockerill-Sambre was completed just before Christmas. Yet another ownership change occurred just prior to Christmas when the United Kingdom's Allied Steel & Wire (ASW) announced a series of moves that will closely ally the company to France. Germany's Hamburger Stahlwerke (HSW) was acquired by the Indo-Indo-nesian Ispat Group just after Christmas. And, the European Union (E.U.) approved a bid for special steel producer AST by a German-Italian consortium led by Fried Krupp AG Hoesch-Krupp. Eko Stahl AG - Cockerill-Sambre plans to focus its initial new investment in ironmaking. It intends to build a new 1.5 million metric ton/year capacity blast furnace to replace the existing two furnaces. The E.U. has limited the plant's rolling production to 900,000 metric tons/year until 1999 as a condition for receiving state aid.
