The development of a continuous thin slab casting process for slabs with thick-nesses of only a few centimeters permits i Trolling to be reformed in-line with V simple steads. Hence, the flat investment cost involved in a ^national hot strip rolling mill is unnecessary. Consequently, electric furnace rninimills with a capacity of 1 million tons per year or less can enter the (hit products market. Of course, thin slab casting technology also is very promising for large integrated steel mills. Worldwide, new thin slab casting processes are being developed and explored with experimental or pilot casters, Up until now, however, only two concepts have reached industrial application: the compact strip production (CSP) process of SMS Schloemann-Semag AG (EMS), which was commercialized at Kucor Corporation in the United States, and the Inline Strip Production (ISP) process of Mannesmann Demag Huttentechnik (MDH), which was commercialized at Arvedi in Italy.
