摘要

Mold flux must provide thermal insulation to prevent bridging and/or the formation of isolated portions of solidified steel ("steel floaters"). The flux also must maintain the temperature in the meniscus region. Improved thermal insulation reduces the severity of oscillation marks, maintains the channel for flux infiltration at all times and reduces subsurface defects, such as pinholes. Improved insulation reduces pin-. holes because the solidification of the meniscus is suppressed due to a higher working temperature of the liquid steel. These conditions prevent the entrapment of bubbles and other possible inclusions, as shown schematically in Figure 26.
