Like so many IBM i developers, I started my career programming in RPG. Later, I learned to write programs for UNIX and Windows platforms. I thought programmers on those platforms were clever because they always set an exit status that told the caller whether the program ended successfully or in error. When you call those programs from within a larger job stream, you can check whether they were successful before proceeding to the next step of the job stream, and that's useful indeed.
