As a relatively early adopter of RPG in the early 1970s, I learned to program in a vacuum. There were no programming classes in those days, and no computer science departments at universities — just some mainframe Cobol guys, some assembler, and a little Basic used by the time-sharing services. Structured programming had not been conceived. There were glimmerings of things to come in works by Parnas and Dijkstra, but we had no idea how to apply them to RPG II. RPG was unique in concept and execution. We gloried and agonized over such wonders as the RPG cycle, matching records, look ahead, local data areas, level breaks, and stacks of forms for each specification type and for report layout. Indicators ruled our lives. Our idea of modularization was to read data from a file, do some processing, write intermediate results to another file, and repeat until a final result was . obtained.
