You're surfing the web in an obscure airport departure lounge when you get the call: Some critical program has crashed, and they need your expertise back at the ranch to troubleshoot it. Alas, the program in question is running on a machine behind the corporate firewall, and your VPN connection won't give you access to it. What can you do? If you're Unix-savvy, the answer is easy: Remotely connect directly to the server using Secure Shell (SSH), the open-source swiss army knife of remote administration tools. Alas, until recently, if your target was an iSeries box, you were S.O.L (secure out of luck). Fortunately, your luck changed on February 9, 2005. That's when IBM answered iSeries customers' long lament for native SSH on i5/OS (see "IBM Needs to Crawl Into a Shell," June 2001, article 10688 at iSeriesNetwork.com). The dictum "better late than never" has never been more true. The network security wars have heated up — with new threats from wireless networks, identity thieves, Trojans, and buffer overflow flaws — and iSeries technologists need every tool they can lay their hands on to fight the battle. SSH is a great sidearm for every network administrator.
