Manganese is one of the most important alloying elements used during the production of several steel grades because it significantly improves the mechanical properties of steels. For example, addition of manganese in steel reduces grain boundary embrittlement caused by sulfur and enhances mechanical properties such as hardenability, strength, hardness and toughness." Due to the fact that higher manganese levels are required than are presently achieved in steelmaking, manganese is added to steel in ladles usually in the form of ferromanganese (FeMn). Also direct addition of less expensive manganese ore is practiced in an oxygen steelmaking (OSM) converter to increase Mn content in steel. The slag/metal equilibrium experiment is carried out, wherein the activity of Mn oxide is measured, to control the reduction of Mn oxide in slags.
