Don't ignore this important ecosystem. Artist and sustainability social scientist Edgar Cardenas collaborated with ecologist Christofer Bang to explore urban systems, such as this golf course near Phoenix, Arizona, that can actually serve as resource buffers. They bring water, shelter, and food, creating a new relationship with the nearby flora and fauna. Cardenas and Bang suggest that rather than simply bemoaning human encroachment into nature, we need to increase our inquiries and interrogations regarding the interactions and relationships we have with our immediate environments. At the Edges is their effort to take a fresh look into these understudied spaces where urban infrastructure, residents, and the desert meet.
