I commend Marc Levinson ("Is the Smart Grid Really a Smart Idea?", Issues, Fall 2010) for putting front and center something that is often lost in technical and energy policy discussions: that the smart grid should be subject to a cost/benefit test. The "if it's good, we've gotta do it" mindset pervades the smart grid discussion. Levinson provides a useful reminder that one needs to compare benefits to costs to see if the smart grid is worth it.
