摘要

The Italian painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo served as court portraitist to Ferdinand I at the Habsburg court in Vienna and later to Maximilian II and his son Rudolf II at the court in Prague.rnAlthough Arcimboldo produced numerous traditional portraits and designs for costumes, pageants, and festivals during his decades as a court artist for emperors, he is remembered primarily for his striking paintings of composite heads, which have been the subject of extensive discussion. Many of his contemporaries regarded them simply as clever and amusing jokes, but later observers find richer layers of meaning. They believe that serious investigations of nature inform the paintings and that they can be read as political allegories. Copies were widely distributed throughout Europe, and they could very well have served to build the images of their imperial sponsors.
