On July 6, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) released its final guidelines on human stem cell research, opening the door to expanded federal funding of research involving embryonic stem cells. During the April-May public comment period, NIH received nearly 50,000 opinions on the draft guidelines that it had released in response to President Obama's executive order lifting restrictions on stem cell funding.rnPerhaps the most important change from the draft guidelines was NIH's decision to make previously derived stem cell lines that follow the spirit of the new ethical guidelines, if not the exact documentation requirements, eligible for funding.
