Vivek Wadhwa, Gary Gereffi, Ben Riss-ing, and Ryan Ong from Duke University have clearly put a lot of work into their study of engineering education in the United States, India, and China ("Where the Engineers Are," Issues, Spring 2007). From the perspective of current and future U.S. competitiveness and national security, it is clear that we need to have more studies such as this one. That acknowledged, we have some important reservations regarding their analysis.
