Cooperation between the United States and Russia in human space-flight holds the key to humanity's future exploration of space. It was 20 years ago this July that the United States and the Soviet Union conducted the first in-orbit docking of two spacecraft—the dramatic linking of Apollo and Soyuz. That achievement, and the docking in June 1995 of the U.S. space shuttle Atlantis with the Russian space station Mir, are widely separated but major milestones in implementing a strategic vision that has intrigued U.S. presidents for more than three decades. That vision is built around the concept of the United States and Russia joining forces in human spaceflight and exploration, and it may become reality in the next several years.
