Indonesia lies in one of the world's most geologically active zones. As a result, it has suffered many natural disasters arising from volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tsunami, including the massive Indian Ocean tidal wave in December 2004. In April 2006, signs of an eruption were seen at Mount Merapi, a volcano in central Java. Tremors and lava flows forced the evacuation of local residents, then on 27 May, an earthquake of magnitude 6.3 occurred about 80 kilometers southwest of Mount Merapi, in the Yogyakarta region.
