The Kingdom of Bhutan has a digital telecommunication network connecting all of its 20 provinces and major commercial centres. The main backbone network consists of 155 Mbit/s and 34 Mbit/s digital microwave routes in the eastern part of the country, while an STM-4 fibre-optic transmission system links some urban areas in the west via digital switching systems. Connectivity remains limited in rural and isolated areas, where 80 per cent of the population lives and depends on subsistence farming. As of March 2006, the nation's teledensity was just over 5 per cent; however, in rural areas it is below Ⅰ per cent.
