A VISION FOR TOMORROW'S surface transportation system is centered on leveraging evolving technologies such as wireless communication, sensors, and cloud computing in an integrated, sustainable network of vehicles and guideways. To put this vision in perspective, one must foresee the attributes and components of the future environment. For example, by the year 2030 the world's population may expand by 40 percent, with 60 percent or more projected to live in megacities of 10 million people or more. Further, some 20 percent of the population in the industrialized world will be older than 65, and domestic travel and international commerce will more than double.
