In a 2000 article, Lt. Commander Glenn Hansen of Howard County, Maryland, USA stated that "according to the Insurance [Institute] for Highway Safety, drivers who run red lights are responsible for an estimated 260,000 crashes each year. About 750 of these are fatal and the numbers are rising." It is doubtful that this trend has reversed itself in the decade since the publication of the article. The latest available data from die same agency indicate that "red light running killed 676 people and injured an estimated 113,000 in 2009." Is there an effective, workable, and self-enforcing solution to this problem?
