Current smart growth strategies and efforts to improve land-use and transportation sustainability make it more important to quantify internal traffic for mixed-use developments as accurately as possible. This article evaluates different methods used to estimate internal capture of traffic within mixed-use developments. MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENTS have become more prevalent as the result of smart growth strategies and other efforts to improve land use and transportation sustainability. Transportation planners have been challenged to develop a credible and appropriate method that quantifies the number of trips that would be made between the various uses in the development and would thus remain internal. These internal trips are expected to be made on foot or by bike (or auto for larger mixed-use developments or new towns).
