My parents survived the Great Depression and in the 1950s and 1960s reared 13 children as sharecroppers in rural Alabama. They figured out a way to get it done. There was a lot of hard work, tremendous sacrifices, and difficult decisions-but most important, there was the support of the entire community pulling together for each other. I took away from their experiences invaluable lessons growing up in a pecan orchard, in a small sharecropper's shack. They were lessons that I thought I would never have an opportunity to use.
