The forthcoming Highway Safety Manual (HSM) has been developed to be the definitive document for highway safety analysis. It provides science-based quantitative information for integrating safety into project analyses. Applying tools from the manual will support the transportation professional to quantitatively estimate the number of crashes or potential number of crashes associated with a particular condition or treatment. Users will find that each part of the manual provides new tools and concepts for integrating quantitative safety analysis into different transportation planning, design, operations and maintenance projects.
