The European Union is seeking to address congestion on the 50 km journey to work that the typical European commuter makes every morning. One solution is the Personal Aerial Transportation System (PATS), technologies for which are being investigated under a four-year EUR4.5 million (USD 5.8 million) project called MyCopter that started in 2011. Under PATS, the highly autonomous Personal Air Vehicle (PAV) concept is a one- or two-person aircraft that takes off vertically and climbs to a maximum altitude of 500 ft. Cruising at just over 50 kt (100 km/h) for about 30 minutes, it will travel the typical 27 n miles (50 km) commuting distance to land at the workplace.
