Increasing strategic instability in Europe is reflected by the raised levels of naval activity in and around the theatre. For many European navies today their modus operandi is to deploy at sea on a daily basis to generate presence. In peacetime such presence enables these navies to support tasks including: enabling free movement of trade along sea lines of communications (SLOCs); mitigating and managing maritime security risks associated with resource protection, terrorism, or various forms of trafficking; building maritime domain awareness (MDA); and deterring higher-end threats to national interests.
