The suicide attack on Gao airport in eastern Mali on 29 November targeted aircraft operated by the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), military sources in the country told IHS Jane's. The attack involved a suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (SVBIED) detonating at the airport and a second containing 500 kg of explosives being recovered at the scene. Al-Mourabitoun, an offshoot of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, claimed responsibility.
