An upgraded naval base south of Safaga was inaugurated by President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi on 5 January a move that seemingly bolsters the Egyptian Navy's presence in the Red Sea, although the Mediterranean remains its primary focus. The Egyptian Navy has had a base in the city of Safaga for many years. Open-source satellite imagery suggests it is home to two Tiger-class patrol boats, two to four fast-attack craft, various small patrol boats, and auxiliaries.
