The Gambian military consists of an estimated 2,500 personnel and Is comprised of the Gambian National Army, the National Republican Guard, and the Gambian Navy, according to Jane's Armed Forces analysis. The core capability of the army is provided by a pair of infantry battalions supported by a single engineering squadron. There are no known armoured vehicles in service and weaponry is limited to small arms and light support weapons, such as heavy machine guns and mortars. Naval vessels are limited to a handful of minor patrol craft and air power is non-existent. A single Sukhoi Su-25 'Frogfoot' attack aircraft was purchased second-hand several years ago but it has since been stored and is no longer operational.
