The Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) has doubled the number of fighters scrambled in response to foreign aircraft approaching the country's airspace, Kyodo news agency quoted unnamed Japanese government sources as saying on 26 January. In 2016 the service started scrambling four fighters in each case of potential airspace violation by foreign aircraft, said the media outlet, pointing out that the JASDF had formerly despatched two fighters in each scramble since it began such operations in 1958.
