The Indian Navy has successfully conducted the first test-firing of an anti-ship missile from its lead Kalvari (Scorpene)-dass submarine, the country's defence ministry announced on 2 March. The firing, believed to have been conducted with an MBDA Exocet SM39 Block 2 missile, was carried out in the Arabian Sea. Given the delays that have beset the programme, INS Kalvari's test firing marks the attainment of another important capability for the Indian Navy, which faces the increasing presence of Chinese vessels in the Indian Ocean Region.
