The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) declared the David's Sling air defence system officially operational on 2 April during a ceremony at Hatzor Airbase. David's Sling provides an intermediate air defence layer below the coverage of the Arrow anti-ballistic-missile system and above the anti-rocket coverage provided by Israel's Iron Dome system. The David's Sling target set includes short-range ballistic missiles and heavy artillery rockets with ranges of 40 to 250 km, such as the Iranian Fajr and Zelzal artillery rockets known to be in service with the Lebanese militant group Hizbullah. Developed by Israel's Rafael Advanced Defence Systems Ltd and Raytheon of the United States, the system has been jointly funded by the Israel Missile Defense Organization (IMDO) and the US Missile Defense Agency.
