One of the increasingly exam-ined but difficult to quantify factors in a potential conflict pitching the United States and its allies against North Korea (the Democratic People's Republic of Korea: DPRK) is what role the isolated Stalinist regime's special forces might play. North Korea's armed forces number almost 1.2 million active-duty personnel, yet their overall readiness is often called into question. Visitors to North Korea and eyewitness accounts from inside the country often talk of Korean People's Army (KPA) units not being seen drill-ing or moving in proper military formations, but instead engaged in harvesting crops or perform-ing other menial duties.
