Latvia will meet the NATO target of spending 2% of GDP on defence in January 2018, President Raimonds Vejonis announced on 19 June. After a ceremony to mark the completion of the deployment of NATO's multinational battlegroups at Camp Adazi, Latvia, Vejonis told Jane's that this spending level was more effective for Latvia as a NATO member than the 20% of GDP it spent on defence without an alliance before it was occupied by the Soviet Union in June 1940.
