US Secretary of Defense James Mattis said on 9 August that his support for the submarine arm of the US nuclear 'triad' of delivery systems - strategic nuclear submarines (SSBNs), silo-based intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), and long-range strategic bombers - is absolute and that nuclear bombers will certainly remain part of the US arsenal, although he was hesitant on the future of ICBMs.
