Syrian troops have made rapid advances that represent "fundamental changes in the Syrian Arab Republic", according to Colonel General Sergei Rudskoy, chief of the Main Operational Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian armed forces. In a briefing in Moscow on 21 August, Gen Rudskoy displayed a series of maps showing the main advances in central Syria, which included the encirclement of the area around Uqayribat: a town in Hamah province. He said a large Islamic State force is now trapped in the encirclement and that Uqayribat "will be liberated in the near future".
