As Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) works its way through the trio of Ford-class carriers already in the US Navy (USN) pipeline, company executives are hoping to get possible block buys for carriers. First-of-class USS Gerald R Ford (CVN 78) is now going through systems testing in preparation for deployment while USS John F Kennedy (CVN 79) is being built at HII's Newport News Shipbuilding yard in Virginia and is about 35% complete. There is a federal cost cap now of about USD11.4 billion on follow-on Ford-class ships. One way USN officials say the price could be reduced would be to award multicarrier deals: something that has not been done in decades.
