Indian security forces continued to comb the compound of an Indian Air Force (IAF) base in the country's northern Punjab state on 5 January, four days after armed gunmen stormed it on 2 January and went on to kill seven military personnel and wound 22. One of the victims was a lieutenant colonel, who died when the booby-trapped body of one militant exploded. National Security Guard (NSG) special forces personnel killed five militants involved in the attack, which targeted the IAF base at Pathankot, 30 km from the Pakistan border, after three days of fighting, but on 5 January they were still searching the area for a sixth gunman.
